Beer Guide 2014: Chehalem Valley

Chehalem Valley

2515-B Portland Road, Newberg,
971-832-8131, cvbrewing.com, 5-9 pm Monday-Thursday, 5-10 pm Friday,
noon-10 pm Saturday, noon-9 pm Sunday.

This unassuming little taproom off Portland Road in Newberg is a throwback to a time before the rise of the gastropub. No paprika or truffle fries here in the heart of wine country—just a bar, some tables, TVs showing football and a dart board. A popcorn machine with a scooper and paper trays sit right by the door. Oh, and there's beer. Lots of beer. Eight to 10 taps are dedicated to Chehalem Valley beer, and there are just as many guest taps, favoring Oregon and Washington. On our visit, the only food available came from neighboring Ye Olde Pizza Shoppe, though a full kitchen was scheduled to open in January. JOHN LOCANTHI.

DRINK THIS: Hop on Pop, a gold-hued double IPA that's wonderfully crisp.
