Beer Guide 2014: Coalition

Coalition

2724 SE Ankeny St., 894-8080,
coalitionbrewing.com. 3 pm-midnight Tuesday-Friday, noon-midnight
Saturday-Sunday.

For years, the most valuable liquid on the block where Coalition's pint-sized brewery and taproom are located was the plasma that used to change hands at the now-shuttered clinic across Ankeny Street. But Coalition helped change the neighborhood for the better, turning out a wide selection of brews whose consistency has attracted a loyal following. It's a neighborhood hangout where you can wash down a reliably good cheeseburger (vegan options available) while cheering on the Blazers, Timbers or Thorns. The King Kitty Red combines four hops in a richly hued ale and Coalition's Two Dogs IPA, a solid representative of the style—to allow you to feel adventurous without leaving your comfort zone. NIGEL JAQUISS.

DRINK THIS: We haven't had it yet, but we're already salivating over an upcoming citrus-heavy brew called Space Fruit.
