Freedom to Launder?

Accused of laundering campaign contributions through his granddaughter and administrative assistant, Portland developer Tom Moyer has challenged the constitutionality of Oregon's election law, which requires disclosure of contributions' sources.

If Moyer wins in a Jan. 4 court hearing, the result would be "catastrophic for campaign law," according to state Department of Justice spokesman Kevin Neely. If the developer loses, however, things could get worse for Moyer. In addition to the two contributions to mayoral candidate Jim Francesconi targeted in a Multnomah County indictment, a review performed by the Money in Politics Research Action Project at WW's request found at least five other instances when city candidates received contributions from Moyer, his relatives and his daughter's in-laws, the Kassab family, within a day or two of each other.
