Get-Real Time for Maher

I was shocked to read Bill Maher's lauding of Bush's Middle East policy in WW's Q&A interview with Brandon Hartley [March 23, 2005]. Bill says the Middle East is getting "better and better" thanks to Bush's invasion.

WHAT!? One hundred thousand Iraqi civilians are dead after an illegal invasion and occupation based on lies. Over two years after the invasion Baghdad STILL does not even have electricity or running water! Further, the entire U.S. presence there is hiding in a gigantic concrete bunker (the "Green Zone"), completely cut off from the rest of the country-with multiple car bombings and attacks daily. And Israel: nothing like building 30-foot-high reinforced concrete walls around Palestinians. What an improvement (NOT). Also, Bush is about to invade and bomb Iran.

Obviously things are far worse off in the Middle East than they have been for decades-to any thinking person. Maher should get a job at Fox News being the "stupid liberal" for Hannity or O'Reilly to lambaste. Given his half-witted observations on Bush's Middle East policy, he'd be perfect for the role.

Waking the Dead

Concerning your Winners & Losers of March 9, 2005: I have little doubt the failed suicide of David Prueitt will be used by anti-Death with Dignity advocates. My question is: How do they reason it out?

If I recall the story, the gentleman subsequently died from his disease at a later date. Had he not attempted an assisted suicide, he would have...died from his disease at a later date. Are they going to express their disappointment that the procedure does not have a lethal rate of 100 percent?

Only if they could show that Mr. Prueitt and/or others suffered additional pain or suffering from a failed dose might they have a bit of a logical toehold.

Window Shudders

As a very out gay man, I was appalled to read Byron Beck's March 23 [Queer Window] column interviewing school-board candidate Dan Ryan. In the first sentence, he mentions all the people vying for positions on the school board. He references the sexuality of only Dan Ryan.

Why is that pertinent to the position? Later in the interview, Beck expresses concern that people will think because Ryan

is gay, he wants to be on the board because of a penchant to molest children.

For quite a while now, Beck's columns have been insignificant-particularly to members of the gay community who otherwise thoroughly enjoy reading WW.

What resonated most for me after reading this piece was that Byron Beck, well meaning though he may be, is so filled with shame and self-loathing about his own sexuality that he is hardly the person to be writing a column "for" the gay community.

100 K Dead?Really? Does Mr. Hitchcock realize that the only people still spouting that BS number from the Lancet are leftist twits. For his and others enlightenment, legitimate studies aren't done by asking people in three towns: "How many people do you know who have died" and then using the 'scientific results' to extrapolate a number for an entire country.Only an idiot would do that.....or give any credence to the result.—Chris the Hun

Chris the right wing appologistChris, if you shut Fox news off for a second, you may realize that there is an actual war in Iraq. The truth is that there isn't any good way to determine how many Iraqi civilians have been killed. No one is directly counting and tracking Iraqi deaths, because that would be virtually impossible in a war zone. The 100,000 number comes from a study by The Lancet (a UK Medical Journal). No Governments have even attempted to make any estimates, including the Pentagon. So are you saying that no Iraqis have been killed in all of the bombin and violence in Iraq over the past two years? Or just because YOU don't like acknowledging that the That the immoral war based on lies and manipulation perpetrated by the GOP has killed a significant number of innocent people. The number is only bogus if you can offer a better estimate, otherwise I would say 100,000 is the closet to a scientific accurate estimate that exists at this time.I know, all those damn intellectual scientist telling you conservatives what to do. I mean conservatives are perfectly capable of creating an imaginary reality on their own. Thanks for proving (once again) that the conservative echo chamber is full of $#%$. —Tired of converative morons

Apparently...Mr. 'Tired' isn't aware that the methodology I described is exactly what the lancet did: ask people in three towns how many people they knew who died and extrapolating from that to a number for the ENTIRE country of Iraq.In case Mr. "tired" isn't aware, a number can be bogus in and of itself regardless of whether there is a 'better estimate'. Also that while there may not be a 'good' way to determine the number of dead, there are certainly 'bad' ways to do so. I described one of them above.Mr. "Tired' can also make all of the tired little leftist rants he wants about the immoral war and lies and manipulation and the end result is still that adults will have to deal with world issues and the dangers facing us.....the whiny children can sit on the sidelines and piss and moan as long as their childish stupidity doesn't interfere with the adults trying to keep this country from being attacked again. You leftists may not like how we are currently handling the world situation but you will have to pardon us if we notice that the leftist method of declaring everything wonderful and fine while doing nothing didn't seem to work real well.Maybe singing a couple of choruses of kumbaya will help. But I doubt it.—Chris the Hun
