Gossip Should Have No Friends

WORK OF ART When Art Chenoweth came to WW as an intern three years ago at age 80, he had been on this planet longer than anyone else at the paper. But that didn't mean Art was old. On the contrary, at the time Art was a student at Portland State University, already an accomplished writer, father, grandfather, veteran of World War II and one of the most life-cherishing people anyone could ever hope to meet. Never the condescending type to start a sentence with "When I was your age...," Art was a student and a teacher. He had a unique way of asking questions that would force you to rethink answers you thought you already knew. Art Chenoweth passed away Dec. 6 at home of natural causes. He will be missed, but more important, he will be remembered.

P.S.1 New York's Contemporary Arts Center has just announced an ongoing series of lectures, Fine Print: Alternative Media at P.S.1, set to highlight some of the country's most innovative alternative publications, including The Believer and, drumroll, Portland's own Clear Cut Press, founded by Richard Jensen. SLAVE TRADE The bids are in from the Portland Mercury's charity auction, revealing, among other things, the price Portlanders are willing to pay to possess Merc staffers for an evening. The results? Publisher Rob Crocker went for $61.
