HOMELESS, NOT HOPELESS

This is in regard to the recent police presence in the South Park Blocks. This is NOT a "down on martial law in the park" letter. I think everyone has the right to walk the streets without fear. This is to express my dislike at being blamed for drug dealing, fighting, mugging and other sordid activities that occur there just because I am homeless. That's right, I said, "I am homeless."

I am also a college student, attending classes at Portland Community College. Today I missed class because I was awakened at 2:30 am—in the rain, on a church doorstep, where I have permission from the church to sleep—because I, and people like me, are now the cause of everything that is evil in Portland.

I am not a drug dealer, nor is anyone else you see panhandling. The funny thing about drug dealing is that it causes you to have money. The funny thing about having money is that it causes you to lose all interest in panhandling and not living in a house. Therefore, drug dealing leads to not being homeless, and I find it unfair that so many newspaper articles discussing the problem of drug abuse and sales are headed by a big black headline that says "something, something homeless."

A typical day for me starts at around 8 am, when I get up and catch the free shuttle bus to PCC. There I go to class, do homework, etc. until 6 to 8 pm, when I catch another free shuttle downtown and sit outside a restaurant, hoping someone is kind enough to buy me breakfast/lunch/supper. Then it's off to a doorstep or under a bridge to sleep for the night. Once in a while, when someone is so kind as to let me use their bathroom, I shower so as not to be any more offensive to my classmates than is unavoidable.

Funny, isn't it? In some ways I am so much alike anyone else, but so different in others. Take, for instance, that if someone asks me for money, and I have some, I give it to them, or perhaps the fact that I want to pursue a career in social service and/or mission work after graduation because I see people who need help, not nuisances to be overlooked or run out of downtown. I feel it is a sad society, a society destined for a fall, that does not strive to help its underprivileged and pushes them out of sight instead.

Finally, before I say thank you and goodnight, I must apologize for signing this letter "Anonymous." It's not that I'm afraid to tell you who I am—I'm all around you. I just hope that the next time you turn up your nose at that girl in the hooded sweatshirt, you'll wonder, "Did she write that letter?" Am I the old man with the sign on the corner? I could be. Do you really want to make me go to bed hungry? Could some of the other "nuisances" that you try to pretend aren't there be just like me? YES.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORHello Anonymous!I say, AMEN to all that you have said in your rant! So well put, so well written. Keep up with your education, don't let ANYTHING force you to quit, its the only way you will ever be able to make a life for yourself, or to help people working through social work. SUCH an admirable major! Good for you! This society does seem to be against low income people pursuing an education, and/or empowering themselves through education, improving their lot by working hard to get an education! I am a 40 year old student at PSU. (I have been there for three years straight now) and its amazing how many state funded benefits I am denied because I am not working that essential "20 hours" a week. How can I, when I am a full time student,a senior at PSU, the mother of a 14 year old child AND caring for a disabled husband, of whom I am currently separated, also work 20 hours a week? I CAN'T! I am NOT superwoman and I will NOT even attempt to be. My particular situation fits into no tidy, cozy little category on the forms. I exist in a no man's land of sorts and only suceed academically by my own sheer determination and effort. The only real support I HAVE had has been PSU. Thank God for PSU. Its an institution that is in many respects nameless and faceless to me, in a manner of speaking, but has never failed me, unlike the other programs I SHOULD be eligable for, that I am NOT able to benefit from, because I am not able to work that 20 hours a week, due to my very unique life circumstances of which I have utterly NO control. As to when homeless people "spare change" me, asking only for a little human kindness in the form of a dollar or two, I ALWAYS give. If I AM broke, I say simply, "I'm sorry, I'm broke". Nine times out of ten, I watch these same people walk to the Macdonalds or the Carl's Junior they may be standing outside of, so they can get a burger or fries. I disagree with the poster who says that 99% of homeless have a drug addiction issues, that number is simply preposterous! Many homeless people do have addiction issues but NOT to that degree.I don't know WHERE this individual got his numbers but that number is not only a huge exaggeration it is also comical. That would be like me saying 99% of gay men are HIV positive. NOT TRUE! Its easy to point the finger at homeless who DO have drug abuse issues and say, "just another homeless addict". But what is important, is to understand WHY homeless people become inclined to use drugs, and/or alcohol. Generally it is to numb the emotional pain of being utterly alone and unwanted. Unless a person has been there or has an unusually open mind, there is no easy answer and trite condemnations of the homeless only make the person doing the condemnation look simple and uncaringly stupid. Its easy to point the finger of cold judgement and to be harsh and unfeeling, what better way to get off the hook in terms of involvement or social responciblity? When a person makes simple superficial and unkind condemnations about the homeless, they are released of any moral obligation of doing anything, even if the deed is as small as handing over to some poor soul, a meager fifty cents or a dollar. There are some major things wrong with this country when 2% of the population enjoy 90% of the wealth! My adventure in higher education has taught me alot and sometimes the accumulated knowledge is NOT inspiring. There DOES exist a 'class system' in America and it is horrible to consider. The "American Dream" is no longer an option. It doesn't exist anymore. So, back to you Anonymous, hang in there! You can make a difference and though it may be a struggle, you can do it and the world will be a better place as a result! To all those innocent and ignorant people who enjoy denying the reality of homeless problems, issues, well, just pray your luck continues, because one day it could be YOU!Therrea Kennedy—Therresa Kennedy

LETTERS TO THE EDITORWillamette Week:I guess that it is no surprise that for the last several days, right-wing talk show hosts such as Sean Hannity and Lars Larson have lauded George Bush for his recently exposed policy of spying on anyone, anytime, anywhere, devoid of congressional or judicial oversight. LETTERS TO THE EDITORHey Jerry, You really had me going, "YA!" I'm saying, "YA, this guys making some good points" but then you had to use an overused and derogatory word that is used primarily by illiterate, woman hating black rappers, "Bitches", and specifically, "compliant bitches". You should learn to communicate a thought without resorting to such simple minded tactics. I WAS taking you seriously, until you used the kind of tedious woman hating language that separates the men from the ever ignorant, ever tedious 'dudes'. If you want to be taken seriously, don't speak/write like a guest on Jenny Jones!Jane Smith—Jane Smith
