LAND OF THE FREE, HOME OF THE BANKRUPT

I have two words for citizens: "boom, bust." Got "free market" capitalism? Then you've got a dialectic of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, regardless of popular equivocation. You will also have a rationality-defying cacophony by moral relativists such as Mrs. [Luanne] Stoltz et al. ["Payday Loans: Rich Man, Poor Man," WW, March 15, 2006] who may actually believe a "service" is provided to people who now live hand-to-Stoltz-to mouth.

Listen to your economic apologists on CNN for a good night's sleep, but in the morning the reality remains that any interest rate (including fees) that exceeds the GDP creates unserviceable debt and is, by definition, usury. But God Bless America, anyway.

N-WORD HISTORY

This message is regarding Vee Rucker's quote in last week's article, "Don't Use That Word."

I am so grateful that members of the community are taking a stance against "that word." I am tired of hearing anyone use it, regardless of context! However, I am a bit puzzled by Rucker's reference to the word "scoundrel." [Rucker, of Portland State University's Black Cultural Affairs Board, said at a Jefferson High forum that the word "nigger" derives from a word that originally meant "scoundrel."] I had always thought that "nigger" was a corruption of the Latin/Spanish word "negro," meaning "black." But if there is another etymology here, I would be most interested to learn of it.

TALKING OUT OF SCHOOL

I'm fed up with newspapers like Willamette Week for jumpstarting another round of hysteria and frenzied debate about Portland Public Schools—students and their families at these schools have had no chance to hear from their own superintendent that closures are forthcoming ["School Daze," WW Web exclusive, March 15, 2006]. You failed to point out that the district will be allowing public comment on these closures. You also failed to point out that the plan you describe in "School Daze" is but one of SIX (yes, SIX) to address the issue of school closures and budgetary savings.

Your reporting reminds me exactly why we despise the media in times like these: Rather than helping the public make sense of the larger issue of inadequate funding for schools, you exacerbate everyone's collective angst at how educating our kids is a distant priority in this state. Way to go, WW.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear WW Editor,As recently as April 8th you have a classified ad for Jsm International. After having a lame interview with this "muli-million dollar" company in their hole in the wall rented space without a sign on the door, I was pretty damn sure this was a huge scam. So I go home, look on the internet, and lo and behold....the following. Perhaps it is time to do a story in the WW of the local scam artists for all the sales and marketing businesses lurking in the dark corners of our city. These sick and twisted people feed on young college grads and hopefuls. Don't get suckered. I didn't and I am here to warn you, these people will stop at nothing to manipulate you into making them more cash while you do the work. LETTERS TO THE EDITORI am glad that others who have been solicited by JSM International saw thru the story that they provided. After going for a interview I decided to go on line and check them out first I couldn't even find their web site and today the domain has expired. They are registered in the state but only since march 2006. I also was able to find alot of negative feedback from former employees on the web. Just wanted everyone to know watch out and always investigate companies that might be your employer —Julie brown

wheeler importsI have been avidly searching for job opportunities in Portland and was contacted by "Wheeler Imports" who I also cannot find anywhere on the internet. Then I noticed a similar job posting--- actually exact-- for a different company. "JSM international" I checked out both of their websites.. which are EXACTLY the same... yea somethings up, glad I found this site... looks like they are going by "Wheeler Imports" now. Glad I checked before I went all the way down there. Watch out!!—unknown

In addition to Wheeler Imports, other names in Portland Metro Area that are the commission-only "direct marketing" set ups are:

Hyphire Solutions

Sharpe Marketing

Orcanus Enterprises

Anyone affiliated with the Merrimack Group or World Access Marketing

The keywords to identify these companies in their job postings are currently:

"direct marketing"

"entry-level sales/marketing"

"100% promote from within and O% senority"

"sports &/or entertainment marketing"

These companies essentially have you selling door-to-door, COMMISSION-ONLY. If you can afford to work commission only and pound pavement for 12 hours a day, go for it, but many people have been scammed by misleading or even false information during the interview and training period. Apparently there are one or two up-front companies of this sort that are honest about what you're signing up for, but if the person who calls you to schedule the interview won't give you concrete info about what the job entails, hang up.
