MAYOR TOM POTTER is among the supporters of Ballot Measure 26-91, which would change the city to a "strong mayor" form of government.

For gawd's sake, pay attention!

In May 2005, fewer than one in five Multnomah County voters bothered to turn in a ballot. This time around, can we do a little better? Please?

We'd be lying if we suggested the fate of Western civilization is on the line. It's not. But Portland's future form of government and the cast of characters who make decisions for 60,000 kids in the Portland, David Douglas and Parkrose school districts are.

Besides, we've spent countless hours with the candidates and those who support and oppose the various measures on the May 15 mail-in ballot just so you don't have to. The least you can do when you get your ballots this week is vote!

Here are our picks:

Vote Yes on 26-91 for a Stronger Council form of Government!

Shame on you, WW! The language you use in your writing shows your lack of research on this subject and your buying into the status quo. It is inappropriate of you to use the emotionally-charged language of the opposition in your endorsement explanation to this measure. I bet you also use the phrases "Death Tax," "Partial Birth Abortion," and "Global Climate Change" in your writings. How do you pronounce "nuclear," anyway? Did the Swift Boats for Truth buy you off too?

By the way, the two examples you gave of "ambitious mayors" who "had no problem" with the current system have both come out in support of the change.

You don't know what you are talking about!

Your endorsement of David Wynde for school board lists three very surprising attributes for choosing him as your candidate:

1. He has been blessed with a weaker opponent than Doug Morgan's challenger;

2. He listens to his opponents;

[Who are his opponenets? Do you mean Michele Shultz? Or do you mean parents, teachers and others who want strong public schools for Portland's children? On second thought, yes, I could see why you would call them his opponents.]

3. He's not punch-drunk in love with the superintendent.

About Michele Shultz, David Wynde's challenger, you say that she is bright and energetic, has many of the same attributes that make Ruth Adkins a better candidate than Doug Morgan, and her biggest weakness is inexperience.

I think your reasons for endorsing Mr. Wynde are incredibly weak, and I would count the fact that Michele Shultz has not served on this school board as a HUGE reason to vote FOR her, not against her.

Go Michele (and Ruth)!! Take back our schools, for ALL our children.

In response to the previous comment by "D" -- she can take comfort in the knowledge that the big 'O' will endorse 26-91 in spite of the well-reasoned findings laid out in the City Club report referred to by WWeek. Of course, there's no knowing whether or not any of the O's editors read that report because they never printed an article about it. Anyone else can read the report here:

So now that Vicki Phillips is leaving PPS, does that change your endorsements? You seemed to back both Adkins and Wynde in large part because of their stances towards Phillips' policies....Without that in play any more, which candidates do you think would be best for the students?

I no longer live in Portland so my impute doen't mean much [ I'm sure many think my impute never was much LOL]. The measures: I actually agreed with WW on all, now that is different for me, usually I disagree. As for office seekers I haven't a clue. Those that indorse Vicki Phillips, I think it matters not. Viccie was in a Damned if I do, Damned if I don't position.
