>As someone who performs live improvised comedy, I was thoroughly impressed, infatuated and inspired by the skill and humor presented by the Upright Citizens Brigade Touring Company
last Friday night. I noticed several other Portland improvisers in the audience that night as well, and you could almost feel their urgency as they left the Miracle Theater
(425 SE 6th Ave.) so that they could immediately go practice and become as good as these New York comics. But you didn't have to be an insider to the comedy world to appreciate the masterful display of hilarity.
Led by Eli Newell, raised in Lake Oswego, this five-man team cracked ribs while cracking jokes for half-hour sets. Launching off from the single suggestion of "stop smoking," they ran through a series of scenes including doctors who color their x-rays and a guy with a major staring problem--they even went back in time. All the scenes flowed together smoothly, and each one was full of great energy and crazy characters.
Some shows leave you wanting more; others make you say, "Thank God it's over." This show gave you exactly what you needed, no more and no less.
