The O's Jeff Kuechle notes the 5,000-plus square foot top-floor penthouse is "luxuriously finished." Well, not quite, the suite has yet to even be sheet-rocked, but will surely impress once finished later this year. This pad can't be beat as few Portlanders own homes in the sky larger than NBA basketball courts.
Not to be outdone, another well-heeled buyer recently purchased both penthouse-style units on the building's 30th floor and is combining them into a gigantic 5,000 square-foot pimp shack. It will lack the enormous deck that wraps around the entire periphery of the grandiose top-floor lair. But don't feel sorry for the buyer: The 30th floor pimps several large covered balconies of its own.
Even more interesting than the John Ross is what's popping up around it. Gerding Edlen Managing Principal Kelly Saito says construction of the South Waterfront neighborhood is ahead of schedule. Three buildings are already completed with several more under construction just three years after the first tower broke ground. The Daily Cafe is serving breakfast and lunch in the OHSU building that anchors the tram. And a second restaurant, a specialty grocer, and a coffee shop are all slated to open later this year. In just a year since the Meriwether opened doors to its first residents, the South Waterfront is already beginning to feel like a neighborhood, despite all the cranes and the fact that Zidell is still building barges just a stone's throw from some of Portland's most expensive real estate.
