Every once in a while, two unrelated news stories converge in a burst of synergy. This is such a time.
Story #1: Multnomah County Sheriff Bernie Giusto takes heat for not reigning in sick-leave and overtime abuse among deputies.
Story #2: The County Auditor's Office conducts a public records sting to find out how good the county is at providing information to the public.
Confluence: One of the documents requested by the auditor's team was a list of Sheriff's Office internal affairs investigations from this year.
So, since they'd already been compiled, Willamette Week requested the Sheriff's internal affairs records from the auditor
. Here's what we found:
It doesn't look like investigating his own department's sick leave abuses has been a high priority for the Sheriff. Out of 44 investigations, only one was into the false reporting of sick leave. Three were for general use-of-leave issues.
