Duke Ellington, Money Jungle

Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Max Roach having one of the most powerful musical conversations ever. It’s a very powerful trio.

Charles Mingus, Mingus Ah Um

For me, this record says it all.

Max Roach, Percussion Bitter Sweet

Classic example of a great drummer, composer, visionary that made the most unique personal record. His wife, Abbey Lincoln, sings on it.

Miles Davis, Live at the Fillmore East

It’s a combination of the people in the band and how that informs the music. The way it was edited, by the late Teo Macero, really influenced the record a lot in a way that I think is artistically cool.

Stan Getz, Focus

It was one of the first times jazz had a string quartet. My dad played on it, as part of the string quartet.

SEE IT: Medeski, Martin and Wood play the Roseland Theater on Friday, Feb. 26. 8 pm. $25. All ages.
