Several hundred Portlanders gathered this afternoon at Pioneer Courthouse Square to
continue the ongoing protest over the fatal Jan. 29 police shooting of
Aaron Campbell.
The crowd listened to Campbell's friends and family before marching south on Broadway to rally in front of Portland State University's Smith Memorial Student Union — near where Attorney General
John Kroger was holding a public meeting.
Chants of “It's about who? People” and “What do we want? Justice” kept the crowd energized as demonstrators held signs such as “Public Servant vs. Public Tyrant” and “Serve and Protect not Seek and Destroy.”
Police blocked traffic for the protesters as the swelling group of nearly 500 headed down the middle of Broadway and towards PSU. Upon reaching the Park Blocks, the diverse crowd regrouped to listen to more testimonies from African-American leaders and members of Copwatch. All in all, a fitting end to what's been a tumultuous week of protests, with the likelihood that there's more to come.
