It looks like it's finally going to happen...and soon. We mentioned sometime pre-Local Cut that Kelly's Olympian was joining the Portland venue big leagues, completely renovating the ex-knive shop next door into a serious concert space. For various reasons (none of which we actually know) Kelly's dragged a bit in getting it together, bumping their planned opening from St. Patrick's Day 2006 to St. Patricks Day 2007 to, hopefully, this year's Rose Festival.
According to night manager Ryan Pawley, they've hit a small snag (hence the "hopefully"), having to do with accessibility issues: they need to install a stage elevator. Where and how they'll pull that off, I don't know. But, they're determined.
Details on the new space are still a little hazy. Nalin Silva--Kelly's current booker--will continue next door, booking shows Wednesday through Sunday (as opposed to Kelly's current one or two shows a weekend). Expect a range of music genres, mostly local, but probably including at least a night of out-of-towners. We'll keep you posted and definitely track down Silva for some pre-opening words.
Last night, Pawley was kind enough to show me around the new room. Have a look...
This one's looking down towards the stage from the second level sound booth. The dude's Pawley.
The knife shop's awesome old ceiling isn't going anywhere.
Facing the front door. The sound booth's going above.
From the stage corner. Towards the front door.
