Natalie Chanin Knows How to Work a T-Shirt

project_alabama_corsettee

Natalie Chanin is an Alabama-based apparel designer and dressmaker who launched an empire when, over a decade ago, she took previously-worn t-shirts and re-worked them into stunning, one-of-a-kind couture quality garments using the quilting and beading techniques practiced by generations of women in Florence, Alabama—Chanin's home base. Fast forward several years and Alabama Chanin—Chanin's unique line of clothing and accessories—is sold in stores like Barneys New York and our very own Mario's, her company runs on the handiwork of talented local artisans, and she has published two books that show you how to re-imagine your drawers full of old t-shirts and give them a second, more glamorous life. Meet her next week at the downtown Mario's. She'll be there on Wednesday, April 14, and Thursday, April 15, from 10am to 5pm, showing her spring collection and signing Alabama Studio Style—her new book. Mario's downtown, 833 SW Broadway, (503) 227-3477. MAP
