Randy Leonard: I'll Announce Election Plans After Labor Day

Former City Commissioner Randy Leonard and his patented Portland Loo.

After City Commissioner Amanda Fritz recently announced her plans to run for re-election in 2012, we asked Commissioner Randy Leonard on Wednesday whether he plans to run next year for a fourth term in City Hall.

Rumors about Leonard's plans are rife in Portland political circles, but Leonard tells WW the public will have to wait a bit longer to learn of his plans. Leonard says he won't announce his intentions until early September.

"I will announce right after Labor Day, which is the traditional campaign season," Leonard says.

As for speculation he may wait until the filing deadline to drop out and open the race to a chosen candidate (perhaps his friend, longtime political operative Steve Novick), Leonard says that's not his plan.

"You can quote me on this one: That will not happen," Leonard says. "I have seen that happen, and I think it is reprehensible."
