"Extortion" Mug Shot Site Operator Identifies Himself: Kyle Ritter, Who Also Runs Pdxbars.com

Portlander Kyle Ritter has admitted to blogger Jack Bogdanski that he's behind pdxmugshots.com and its various sister sites throughout the country.

WW on Wednesday published an article about the mug shot sites, which was charging people $39 to remove their booking photos. Two sources have since tipped WW that Ritter is behind the site. After WW called Ritter Thursday, he apparently sent Bogdanski an email, which was then posted on bojack.org.

"Hi Jack, my name is Kyle Ritter. I run PDXmugshots.com/KA Marketing and I will not be answering any calls, emails, or knocks on my door... from anyone. That includes all WW staff. So then, now you know."

WW has now confirmed that Ritter is behind the sites and KA Marketing, the parent company. Ritter has not responded to numerous calls and emails.

Ritter, 35, lives in Northeast Portland and runs pdxbars.com, a site that reviews local bars. Previously, according to his LinkedIn account, he worked at Barfly, a magazine and website that offers a similar service.

Pdxmugshots.com and affiliated sites claim that "There are two of us. They guy typing this is named Barry [sic]." Responses to complaints about the site filed with the Oregon Department of Justice were also signed "Barry."

And when WW began reporting about the mug shot sites, "Barry" agreed only to speak to the paper only if we signed an agreement to keep his identity secret. WW declined. KBOO in December did grant "Barry" an interview in which he talked about the website.

Wow. Brilliant reporting. WW researches its stories by (a)reading personal local blogs and (b)Googling Linkedin.com.

Seriously? Is WW just plain too flat-ass broke to practice journalism?

Journalism in the modern era is approximately 50 percent Googling. The rest is making phone calls. What should we be doing that would cost more?

Well the WW definitely doesn't proofread. What does "Previousuly" mean?

08.26.2011 at 03:17

Actually, we proof read everything, but this one obviously slipped through. Thanks for spotting it.

Actually extortion can only be called out when the activity is based on private, un-published information.  Somebody may want to check out the OR law before name-calling

the man (or woman) above is....Genius.

Is proofread one word or two? Can you google that one? Guess all the good writers are moving to PR.

08.26.2011 at 05:23

... which is exactly the reason we have copy editors. You'd be surprised how many good writers have shoddy knowlegde of spelling and style.

How about... if you dont want people to know that you committed a crime... you dont commit the crime.  If you're not a delequent, then this whole thing doesnt even effect you.

Poor ones too, obviously.

The only reason these extortionists put mug shots online is to extort through affiliated "removal" sites. It's a huge extortion-scam. You pay one "removal site" to remove a mug shot only to see it soon appear on another mug shot site. No doubt affiliated with the first site and/or the "removal site."

They also pay ‘domain privacy services’ to hide their sites’ registrant required name, telephone number, agents, physical address, etc, while they themselves create fictitious IP traces with various false physical addresses such as the UK, Hong Kong, Seattle, Texas etc - all over the internet to throw inquirers off, when they are really in Florida (mostly). RE: Mugshots.com. You can't contact them, no one knows who is behind the curtain (yet). No names, no telephone numbers, no physical address, but they got your number and they're plastering it all over the internet! They have NO ACCOUNTABITY. They're not the government, police, they're not even a legitimate business! They're nothing more than blogs. Google mugshot scams! They themselves are felons who keep their own mugshots off their own websites.

These online mug shots sites, the people profiting while hiding behind them, deliberately tagged for Google indexing to the first page, are causing discrimination, job loss, financial loss, emotional damage, criminal behavior, homicidal behavior, and SUICIDE!...>

Not to mention increased loss of faith and increased disrespect towards police enforcement, legislation, and the whole system: When ANYONE is allowed to copy mug shots, demographic, identifying info including home address, birth place and license numbers etc off police websites, clerks office websites etc and do whatever they want with that information, that’s when a great majority of the public loses respect for the law. Vast difference between actively looking up someone you know on a police website or going to the police station etc...and putting any old name in search and bingo! first page is the winner. All the information Identity Watch Dogs warn us about is displayed right their because someone got a 1)Dismissed Case 2)Reduced Charges 3)Did something stupid, payed their debt...so many scenarios...Lots of levels of law breaking....F-123, M-123 and there are levels for good reason. Put someone's mug shot for all the world to see immediately upon a quick name search and all the world CONVICTS that person GUILTY! And even if they were guilty, do the deserve a lifetime of ridicule and black mail?--->

FYI: The fastest growing crime in Florida and elsewhere is identity theft, post the Sunshine Law - due to all the personal information available on search websites: Namely GOOGLE. Everyone is profiting off the vulnerable. It's already hit the fan!

FYI: Very many people are losing their marbles over this Mug shot invasion of privacy, mugshot extortion, mug shot scams. People every single day are being hurt because of these websites run by EXTORTIONIST! You don't think people are going to flip their lids when they search their name and see all their stuff splayed on the front page?  Imagine the consequences if your local paper decided to run your (or someone you know) mug shot every single day on the front page just because they could. Every-single-day! You wanna know the reason they don't? Because everyone knows their (the paper, staff, editors etc) names and location. These mug shot websites go to great lengths to hide themselves. Buuuuuuut, there's always a way. Watch, just you watch, someday someone who's been pushed to his limit over this is going to go ape-shat crazy...

Bruce

You pile of shit! You must be one of those bad (criminal) cops or officials that violate our human/constitutional rights and ammendments.  I can see if one is convicted, they probably deserve it but until then you are innocent until proven guilty and are being damaged. Even then our justice system has been known to execute & incarcerate innocent people.  so Mr. Ritter, or do you prefer Kyle- or are you Mr. Watson who runs the other sites or your partner in crime?  You know what you can go do/ I hope to see your face on one of these sites soon.

so how does it work? does the website first publish the photo and then contact the person or do they just publish the photo and then wait and see if the person finds out? i guess they probably would not make any money with a sit and wait business model but either way, that dude has some bad kharma coming his way.

I think he has every right to post mugshots publically.  if you get arrested you lose your rights by law.  If you don't want to get your mug on a website, then don't put yourself in situations to get arrested.  Take some personal accountability and quit whining cause your boss say your drunk ass DUI arrest.
