Veteran Oregonian sportswriter Rachel Bachman is leaving the daily to join the Wall Street Journal in New York. At the O, Bachman was an enterprise reporter, meaning she asked questions of sports figures and institutions beyond what it felt like to win or lose a game.
Bachman won numerous honors for her work, including being named Oregon's 2009 sportswriter of the year. Her coverage of Howard Avery, long Oregon's leading private basketball instructor, played a role in his conviction for sexually assaulting a girl he tutored. And she also wrote numerous stories about the financial relationship between Nike founder Phil Knight and the University of Oregon's athletic department.
A graduate of the University of Michigan, Bachman wrote for The Oregonian for 16 years. She will write about college sports for the Journal, which expanded its sports coverage from one day a week to six days a week two years ago.
Bachman follows other high-profile, award-winning reporters out the door this year, including Pulitzer winner Julie Sullivan.
