The Land, Sea, and Air Tour: Frank Reade
[BOOKS] In the late 1800s, Frank Reade novels were sci-fi, full of steam-punk robots and airships. Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett have brought Reade back into the spotlight with their book Frank Reade: Adventures in the Age of Invention, a faux biography of this fictional character and his marvelous machines. They're launching the book with three events around Portland—this second week at Bridge City Comics will see a visit from Portland pirate cosplayers party people PDXYAR, including a mock battle between the swashbucklers and Guinan as Reade. Bridge City Comics, 3725 N Mississippi Ave., 282-5484. 6 pm. Free.

Thursday, Feb. 16

GOOD Ideas for Cities
[INFOTAINMENT] Infopr0n magazine GOOD is visiting five mid-sized cities to bring together teams of "problem-solvers" to tackle challenges faced by urban communities. Mayor Sam Adams' office will face off against Wieden+Kennedy to improve local education; the Department of Planning will battle OMFG Co. over childhood obesity; while the City of Portland's Sustainable Food Policy and Programs duel with Ziba to get Portlanders to eat less meat and dairy (yeah, good luck with that). Unfortunately, all tickets have been sold, but there will be a line forming from 6 pm to collect unclaimed tickets at 6:45 pm. Ziba Auditorium, 910 NW Marshall
 St. 6 pm.

James Randi at the Center for Inquiry
[INFOTAINMENT] Noted skeptic and former magician James Randi will look at the trickery of various "think tanks" over the past three decades, "launching a world-wide plague of misinformation, the repercussions of which can still be felt today." Dun, dun duuuunn. First Unitarian Church, 1101 SW 13th Ave. 6:30 pm. $10. See more info here.

Guardian Games' Beer, Pizza and Games Night
[GAMING, DRINKING] On the third Thursday of every month, Guardian Games powers-up its regular gaming nights with beer and pizza. This is such a night. Guardian Games, 303 SE 3rd Ave., 238-4000. 6 pm. $10. 21+.

[PINBALL] This pinball tournament at the Slingshot Lounge will see two seperate divisions—Open (playing on Iron Man, Dirty Harry, Twilight Zone, High Speed, Beat the Clock and Skateball) and Classics (playing on Grand Prix, Flicker, Big Casino and Volley)—battling it out for cash and glory. The listing here are written by WW, but we crib events shamelessly from the Geek Portland calendar. Go there for more events and information.
