Mohamed Mohamud Found Guilty

Mohamed Mohamud

A Portland jury took less than a day to find Mohamed Osman Mohamud guilty of trying to bomb the 2010 tree-lighting ceremony in Pioneer Courthouse Square.

Our news partner KATU has full coverage of the verdict, reached at 2:45 this afternoon.

Earlier this month, WW published an excerpt from Trevor Aaronson's book, The Terror Factory: Inside the FBI's Manufactured War on Terrorism. In it, the Mother Jones writer argues that the FBI's counterterrorism program is "backed by $3 billion a year to infiltrate Muslim communities and create terrorists who aren't there."

But that argument hasn't held up in federal courts. Mohamud is the 11th domestic terrorism defendant to argue an "entrapment" defense in his trial. He is the 11th found guilty.

"If the only effective measure is based on court verdicts," Aaronson wrote, "then terrorism sting operations have become a proven product for the Bureau."
