Jeff Cogen Will Return to Work Monday

Multnomah County Chair Jeff Cogen

Multnomah County Chair Jeff Cogen plans to return to work around noon Monday, five days after admitting to an affair with an employee, a county spokesman says.

Cogen has been in seclusion since admitting July 16 to an 18-month affair with Sonia Manhas, the county health department's policy and planning director.

He will face questions from county commissioners—who are said to be wavering in their support of him, as documents released by the county show he used government email to plan social meetings and policy initiatives with Manhas, often working around her boss and his own staff as he supported her promotion.

County spokesman David Austin says Cogen told him late Sunday afternoon that he would return to the Multnomah County building "around lunchtime" Monday.

Austin says Cogen told him he wouldn't speak to the media on Monday. Cogen also told Austin he didn't know when he would talk to the press in the future.
