Here's the Lineup for the 2014 Portland Jazz Festival

Just prior to a particularly hot set by trumpeter Dave Douglas and his quintet, Portland Jazz Festival Executive Director Don Lucoff took to the stage at Jimmy Maks this past Friday to announce some of the lineup for the 2014 edition of the Portland Jazz Festival

Taking place from February 20th to March 2nd of next year, the festival doesn't boast a huge number of jaw-dropping names that even your mom would recognize. But the folks they are bringing to town represent a well-proportioned bunch of players whose work spans the past 60 years of jazz.

Some highlights:

The biggest ticket item on the schedule is Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. This group pulls together members of Marsalis's usual septet and surviving members of Duke Ellington's Orchestra for amazing large-ensemble arrangements of big band, bop, and modern jazz composition. They will perform on Friday the 28th of February at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

For the third year running, the festival brings Portland's most famous native daughter Esperanza Spalding back to town for a performance. This time around, she's playing as part of her new Spring Quartet, which features the amazing Jack DeJohnette on drums, pianist Leo Genovese, and saxophonist Joe Lovano. This show will be going down on Sunday February 24th at the Newmark Theatre

Another local talent Dave Frishberg will be playing a set with 90-year-old legend Bob Dorough that looks to the pair's 1999 album Who's On First for inspiration. And because of Dorough's longtime association with Schoolhouse Rock, don't be surprised if "Three is the Magic Number" shows up in the setlist. They'll also be here on Sunday the 24th of February at the Winningstad Theatre

Also on the docket is local jazz hero Darrell Grant, who will be performing alongside a gaggle of Portland players for a second performance of "The Territory," his piece focused on the history of Oregon (scheduled for Friday Feb. 21st at the Winningstad); 83-year-old pianist Ahmad Jamal (at the Newmark on Feb. 21st); bassist Buster Williams with local pianist George Colligan and wife of Carlos, drummer Cindy Blackman-Santana (Saturday, Feb. 22nd at the Newmark); and closing the festival will be a set by pioneering guitarist Pat Metheny and his Unity Group (Newmark on Sunday March 2nd).
