Portland's Best Dance Music Options, August 21-27

gestaltGestalt, featuring Acid Farm, Desiree, Jak, Alex Ian Smith and Ryan Griffin, is Tuesday at Holocene.
In this column, WW music calendar editor and contributing writer Mitch Lillie helps the discerning club-goer put together their weekly calendar by compiling Portland's best dance-music options for the next seven days. Turn up, tune in, drop the bass.

Being responsible for the beat behind Drake and Rihanna’s “Take Care”—one of the decade’s finest duets and a BPW karaoke favorite—might cause Jamie XX to rest on his laurels, or at least fall into a holding pattern. No way. When you see him play 2014’s “All Under One Roof Raving” on Thursday at Rotture, try to look for any of the pop-ified dub techno he’s used in Drake and Alicia Keys productions—It’s like trying to find out why Rihanna stayed with Chris Brown for so long. (9 pm, $15, 21+)

On Thursday at Holocene, Montreal’s Dave Luxe brings his bass-heavy R&B remixing skills—always with the requisite heavenly synths to boot—to the US on his first ever trip here. His remixes of Future’s “Move That Dope” and Tinashe’s “Vulnerable” bathe the well-trodden originals in a light heavier but softer than anyone else out there, and those are just two of dude’s dozens of reworks. (10 pm, $6, 21+)

Main Squeeze is a chance for a host of local DJs—Kiffo, Rymes, Lightyear, Dylan Stark and Ben Johnson—to stretch their muscles on a well-deserved big stage on Friday at Holocene. Expect a juicy dose of house, techno and disco—and, rumor has it, a couple of extra-special guest DJs from Berlin, Colour Wolf and Hans Heiter. (9 pm, free before 10 pm, $3 after, 21+)

When the over-the-top, frat-obliterating branch of dubstep had nowhere to go, it seeped right out of that genre’s expiring body and into two trap producers: SF’s Antiserum and Atlanta’s Mayhem, who have collaborated on some of the hardest-hitting trap cuts imaginable. Antiserum graces Whiskey Bar on Friday, so be sure to attend if lumber mills are just too quiet for you. (10 pm, $10 advance, 21+)

Beautiful Swimmers are DC’s champions of the throwback house and disco sound. Through their label Future Times, they’ve championed everyone from Slava to Protect-U without ever leaving the underground. Get down on Holocene on Saturday. (9 pm, $5 before 10:30, $10 after, 21+)

This week’s edition of cocktail party cliffsnotes presents: Gestalt. The idea is that a whole is not simply a sum of its parts. That probably makes an apt name for Holocene’s new Tuesday night slot focusing on Portland’s hardware dance aficionados, headed by a live set from Acid Farm feat. Desirée. Those 909s and Moogs are so much more than a heavy pile of cords and metal: it’s live, man. (8:30 pm, $4, 21+)
