Portland School Board: Mike Rosen to Challenge Greg Belisle

Mike Rosen, a parent activist in Southeast Portland, announced today that he would challenge incumbent Greg Belisle for a position on the Portland School Board.

The Portland Tribune was the first to announce Rosen's bid.

Rosen, 54, manages the watershed division for the city of Portland's Bureau of Environmental Services. He's a Cleveland High School dad, who also helped form the Portland Parents Coalition, a group that in 2013 accused Portland Public Schools of violating state law by offering high school students too little instructional time.

The Oregon Department of Education in 2014 agreed with the group, calling PPS "deficient."

Ballots are due in May 2015. So far, Belisle hasn't publicly announced whether he plans to run again.

Next year's election—when four out of seven seats on the school board are up for grabs—has the potential to dramatically remake PPS.
