Couldn't get a ticket to see Barack Obama on Friday? Not to worry: You can instead check out another celebrity who only speaks to the Portland public a few times a year.
Word on the street is that Gus Van Sant will finally make a personal appearance to promote Paranoid Park
in the city where it was shot. The director, who has eschewed local media and even skipped his own Portland International Film Festival party in order to shoot Milk in San Francisco, will introduce the opening-night screening of Paranoid Park at Cinema 21
at 7 pm this Friday, March 21. (That's tomorrow.)
The movie's lead actor is stopping by as well: Gabe Nevins, who plays skateboarder-turned-murder-suspect Alex, will arrive at a showing at 7 pm Saturday, March 22, at the wheel of the same Ford Taurus he drove in the movie. (Van Sant gave him the car
as a 16th-birthday present.)
Even if you aren't into celebrity sightings (and, if not, what's wrong with you? Is your life really that fulfilling?) the movie is well worth checking out: It's Van Sant's best in years.
