This afternoon the
Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, a statewide group of Christian denominations, and the
Interfaith Immigration Coalition held a vigil and protest outside of the immigration office in northwest Portland as part of a national
Isaiah 58 Solidarity Vigil for comprehensive immigration reform.
The small but fervent crowd of about 50 people gave up their lunch hour to fast and pray with other Oregonians in protest of the
SB1070 anti-immigration bill-recently-turned-law in Arizona. Inspired by Isaiah 58 and the notion that a "true fast" will loosen the "chains of justice," groups just like this will be meeting nationwide throughout the summer.
CAUSA Oregon, a sponsor of today's demonstration, will hold another protest against SB1070 at from 5 pm-7 pm on July 29 at
Holladay Park at Northeast 11th Avenue and Holladay Street.
