Portland Penny Diner

410 SW Broadway, 228-7224, imperialpdx.com/portland-penny-diner. Breakfast and lunch Monday-Friday, dinner Saturday-Sunday.

In a diner space alongside WW's 2015 Restaurant of the Year, Imperial, chef Vitaly Paley does pared-down breakfasts for prices cheaper than many food carts at this modern, subway-tiled diner. Calling the Hipster sandwich "simple" is no slight, with tomato, egg and cheese on a house roll for $4.50. But it's the gastrobomb PDXWT ($5.75)—with its wild-style combo of duck bologna, sauerkraut, coffee mayo, egg and American cheese—that makes the place a singular attraction, a small piece of excitement for a day's work at one of the neighboring office buildings.
