Stepping Stone

2390 NW Quimby St., 222-1132, steppingstonecafe.com. Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, late-night Friday-Saturday.

Stepping Stone Cafe doesn't look like it should be at Northwest 24th Avenue and Quimby Street. The small diner, with its yellow custard walls, fire-engine red trim, black and white gingham tablecloths and faded red leather chairs, brings to mind the breakfast joints touring bands pull over to in ramshackle vans. "You eat here because we let you" is its motto, which is more accurate than funny. It makes guests wait outside in the rain while on the waitlist, and a loud '80s punk soundtrack constantly plays. But once you get a hot plate in front of you, none of that seems to matter. Eight bucks gets you a traditional breakfast plate with three long strips of bacon, well-cooked on the outside and fatty on the inside, with two eggs, four pieces of toast, all served on top of scoops of creamy potatoes that take over half the plate.
