Tonalli's Donuts & Cream

2805 NE Alberta St., 284-4510. Early to late daily.

Tonalli's is the sort of place that should exist in every single neighborhood in Portland, but tragically doesn't, a single-service home to both doughnuts and ice cream—evening and morning treats in one beautiful package that make the shop seem like those magical places you used to go as a child when visiting the beach. That said, it's all about the doughnuts. And really, it's all about the banana buttermilk bars with maple on top, which exist as a sort of singular, orgasmic substance melding sweetness with just enough savory weight to make you take the damn thing seriously. But if you must stray, do so in the following order: the ever-folding layer cake of heaven that is the apple strudel, then the massive and decadent blueberry fritter—one of few of its kind in Portland—and then the bacon-bit maple bar. Plan ahead. There's always a line, but it's only four people.
