THURSDAY, OCT. 15
Encountering Cheekface through out-of-context clips of their performances and live radio sessions, which occasionally go viral, you might see them as the nadir of social media deluge as rock lyricism. But there’s a growing army of true Cheek Freaks that’ll die hard for this clean-cut and loquacious squad of Los Angeles geek rockers. Frontman Greg Katz sings like the B-52s’ Fred Schneider reciting his “For You” feed on Twitter out loud but, somehow, he still comes across as immensely likable and sincere. Hawthorne Theatre, 1507 SE 39th Ave. 7 pm. $37.99. All ages.
SATURDAY, OCT. 17
Ilyas Ahmed has been a go-to guitarist in the Portland experimental scene for decades. He’s wrapping up his tour with Seattle drone-pop band somesurprises with a cash-only show at Portland’s Musique Plastique, and he’ll be joined by Pete Swanson, co-boss of the Freedom to Spend label and one-half of the legendary noise duo Yellow Swans. Expect some material from Ahmed and Swanson’s recent collaborative album, Things Left Unseen, which sets Ahmed’s watery guitar atmospherics against burly noise from Swanson’s fearsome electronic rig. Musique Plastique, 640 Stark St. 8 pm. Sliding scale. All ages.
SUNDAY, OCT. 18
Portland prog trio Danava touched down 20 years ago with a 45-minute debut of amp-fried ’70s worship that might’ve found footing in the era when bands like Uriah Heep and Hawkwind were blowing kids’ minds. They’re celebrating the anniversary in tandem with a birthday bash for Yoko Funabashi, owner of Yoko’s Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar, an institution whose place of honor in the Pacific Northwest’s culinary consciousness has been unchallenged since 1989. Polaris Hall, 635 N Killingsworth Court. 7 pm. $22.35. 21+.
