Multnomah County Commissioner Jules Bailey surprised political observers this week when he announced he's likely to challenge state Treasurer Ted Wheeler in the 2016 Portland mayor's race.
After incumbent Mayor Charlie Hales announced last month he won't seek re-election, it appeared Wheeler would run without substantial opposition.
Bailey, 36, a former three-term state representative from Southeast Portland, changed that scenario on Tuesday. If Bailey runs for mayor, he cannot seek re-election to the county seat he won in 2014.
Bailey stopped by WW's office this week to talk about why he's decided to challenge Wheeler.
