Cheap Eats 2009

The new Staccato in Sellwood has expanded beyond Italian ice cream to dollar donuts, sandwiches, soup, waffles (on weekends) and even beer and wine. Try the "For the Love of Pork," sandwich—nutty whole-grain bread with house-roasted pork loin and rhubarb chutney ($5.50). The best deal in the joint is the breakfast sandwich: scrambled eggs and cheese on a cheddar-chive biscuit with a mug of Ristretto Roasters French press (free refills!) for only $4. No visit is complete without a plastic cup of gelato ($2-$3.75)—flavors span classic (pistachio) to interesting (blueberry-rosewater) to out-there (Guinness and orange-cardamom).
