You can't expect to eat more than 150 meals for $10 or less (or $15 at dinner!) without getting a little messy. Since January we've eaten arancine, banh mi, crêpes, döner kebab, egg sandwiches, fries, gyros, hamburgers, ice cream, jiaozi, kolaches, lamb kebab, mac 'n' cheese, naan, omelettes, pancakes, quesadillas, ribs, salad rolls, tacos, unagi rolls, veggie burgers, waffles, xiao long bao, yakisoba and za'atar. See what I did there?
Anyway, we
went to a lot of restaurants, picked our favorites and listed them in
alphabetical order here. For the third year in a row, we also highlighted 25 really good
things to eat that cost less than $7.
You
will notice that none of Portland's countless food carts are listed
anywhere in this package. "Hey," you may be saying to anyone at the bar
who will listen, "hasn't this jackass ever been downtown?" I hear you.
The carts are cheap eats, all right, but there are so many of them—over
600 at our last count—that we have decided to give them a guide all
their own. The first edition of our Eat Mobile guide is here.
The size and diversity of Portland's restaurant economy is such that making a comprehensive guide to budget eating is nearly impossible; I imagine we missed a few places. If we omitted your favorite cheap restaurant, send me an email at bwaterhouse@wweek.com and we'll check it out for next year's guide. Until then, happy eating!
