George Washington

Those who follow the world of cinema may be familiar with George Washington, a critically acclaimed film that found a home on many critics' Best of 2000 lists but never made it to Portland. Well, at long last George Washington is coming to town. Like a strange hybrid of Terrence Malick, Atom Egoyan and Jim Jarmusch, writer-director David Gordon Green takes a microscopic, meandering look at the lives of pre-teens in an industrial North Carolina town. Set against the hazy backdrop of a never-ending summer, and punctuated by a bizarre, tragic twist of fate, George Washington is less about story than mood and atmosphere. This is definitely not a film for people who like things fast-paced. But if you like movies with emotional density and rich in character, then George Washington will fill both quotas. NR (DW)
