CONSUMER WHORE: NYT Fashion Writer Visits Portland

Forget those scraggly Olsen twins and J.Lo with her rat-like crooner sitting front-row, center at Marc Jacobs. At the true forefront of the runway is Cathy Horyn.

Agree or disagree with her razor-sharp commentary (she made headlines last fall for her harsh criticism, and was consequently reported as being banned from runway shows including those of Caroline Herrera, Nicole Miller and Dolce and Gabbana) she's covered the style scene from NYC to Milano as the New York Times fashion critic for the past eight years, in addition to past stints writing for Vanity Fair and The Washington Post. And she will be in Portland for one day next week (Wednesday, April 18) to sound off on "The Duel between Art and Commerce in Fashion." She'll discuss juicy bits about fashion and the media, and how they are influenced by big businesses and celebrity. And she'll talk about the new crop of unique designers in the U.S and abroad who are getting it done.

So here's the low-down. You have two opportunities to hear Horyn speak.

Afternoon stop:

Art Institute of Portland, 1122 NW Davis St., 11:45 am-12:45 pm. Must RSVP to Allena Baker (abbaker@edmc.edu) for seating.

Evening Talk:

Lewis & Clark College, the Council Chamber in Templeton Student Center, 7:30 pm. Free admission.

Both talks will be addressing the same topic. Also in the works, but not yet confirmed, the organizers behind Portland Fashion Week are looking to put together a reception for Horyn later on that evening. Stay tuned for additional info.

In the meantime, brush up on some of Horyn's fashion coverage here and here.
