Billy Martin's Top 5 Favorite Jazz Albums

by Billy Martin (Medeski, Martin And Wood)

Duke Ellington, Money Jungle

Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Max Roach having one of the most powerful musical conversations ever. It's a very powerful trio.

Charles Mingus, Mingus Ah Um

For me, this record says it all.

Max Roach, Percussion Bitter Sweet

Classic example of a great drummer, composer, visionary that made the most unique personal record. His wife, Abbey Lincoln, sings on it.

Miles Davis, Live at the Fillmore East

It's a combination of the people in the band and how that informs the music. The way it was edited, by the late Teo Macero, really influenced the record a lot in a way that I think is artistically cool.

Stan Getz, Focus

It was one of the first times jazz had a string quartet. My dad played on it, as part of the string quartet.

SEE IT: Medeski, Martin and Wood play the Roseland Theater on Friday, Feb. 26. 8 pm. $25. All ages.
