Eugene Police: Please Don't Bring Guns or Signs to Friday's Donald Trump Rally

Eugene cops are trying to pre-empt any violent confrontations between Trump supporters and protesters.

Eugene is girding itself for the arrival of presumptive Republican Party presidential nominee Donald Trump on Friday.

Among those preparations: The Eugene Police Department sent out a press release warning people not to bring guns, knives or signs to the May 6 rally. Especially knives.

"Do not bring weapons of any kind (including knives of any size), umbrellas, signs, banners, or tripods," the release says. "Please limit personal items and do not bring large bags."

Eugene is nearly as reliable a source of progressive protests as Portland, and its police department expects anti-Trump demonstrations when he appears at the Lane Events Center at the Fairgrounds at 7 pm Friday.

Much of the release concentrates on warning that the police will have a heavy presence at the rally, trying to pre-empt any violent confrontations between Trump supporters and protesters.

"We have a liaison who is reaching out to identify groups planning to organize demonstrations," the release says, "to help them to prepare to have peaceful demonstrations."
