Brad Avakian Assembles Political Team to Challenge Wu

Brad Avakian, the elected commissioner for Oregon's Bureau of Labor and Industries, has hired a political adviser from Grant Park Strategies.

Avakian's choice of campaign strategist is significant because it strongly suggests an announcement may be imminent about his plans to challenge U.S. Rep. David Wu in next year's Democratic primary.

Grant Park Strategies is the relatively new political operation led by Josh Kardon, the former chief of staff to U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.). The Portland-based consulting firm also includes Jake Weigler, the experienced campaign manager for Wyden's 2010 Senate re-election and the adviser behind Steve Novick's upstart Democratic primary bid in 2008 for the party nomination to challenge then-U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Ore.). Although Novick lost that primary, his campaign against fellow Democrat Jeff Merkley came closer than many expected.

Weigler today confirmed he is advising Avakian, a former state lawmaker from Washington County whose name first surfaced as a possible challenger just days after news of Wu's erratic behavior first surfaced.

What happens next in Avakian's camp may depend on Wu's recent fundraising efforts. Wu's crucial quarterly financial report for the first part of 2011 will be made public this Friday April 15. Unless Wu raises several hundred thousand dollars, it's unlikely the embattled incumbent from Oregon's 1st Congressional District will be able to ward off potential big-name Democratic challengers like Avakian.

Avakian did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Brad Avakian stirkes me as a first rate public servant, as well as a nice guy.  Being from WA County with leg. and statewide experience puts him in strong position to win and he clearly has what it takes to serve effectively. I hope he runs.

He's way too liberal to win in the first district. Wu is a moderate despite what the tea party says. Avakian winning the primary would be a death knell for democratic control of that district. This paper for some reason is just desperate to attract any candidate so they can feel like a kingmaker and he's the first to bite- somehow I don't see voters in columbia county looking favorably on a willy week backed candidate.

Avakian is considerably more qualified and would make for a strong contender in CD1.  A lot depends on how the redistricting works out. If the district becomes more competative say, for example, by dropping the 17 precincts in Multnomah County, rather than the safe Democrat seat it's been under the current layout someone a less progressive would have a better shot in the General Election.

I don't care who challenges Wu as long as enough of the district is in Multnomah County the democrat will win.

Great to see D's starting to step up to knock Wu out in the primary, but Avakian probably isn't the guy.  Status quo Oregon D, and lacks experience creating jobs and with technology, which is critical to the future of the 1st District.
