Hop Haus

2568 SW Orchard Court, Gresham, 310-8113. By appointment only.

When you stop to think about it, it's not weird that Steve Wesley filled his Gresham garage with a fully licensed one-barrel brewery. What's odd is all his neighbors wasting their space on Buicks. A two-car number on a Gresham cul-de-sac, Wesley's Hop Haus is filled with chest freezers, fermentation chambers, and a hand-built electric brew controller. A longtime homebrewer and civil engineer by day, the 50-year-old spends his weekends crafting a tasty variety of ales and lagers, which range from a simple and sessionable blond ale to a rabidly delicious smoked rye beer. Appearances in local bars are somewhat rare—he brewed only 30 barrels total in 2015—but grab some of his beer if you can. Wesley will continue the project between his long hours at work, with hopes of opening in a bigger place someday.

Drink This: The coconut porter, which is a normal chocolate-laden brew with a gentle hint of coconut that appears toward the end of each sip.
