This week, WW released the highly anticipated Pets Issue. After several weeks of voting by our readers in our Pet Pageant, we determined the most prize-worthy animals in the city. And boy, they did not disappoint.
As a podcast host, it is my duty to take the wonderful reporting that the WW team does each week and figure out an angle that interests me—and hopefully you—the most. This week, I wanted to know two things about Oregon's animals. First, I wanted to know how to get the perfect pet picture. So, I hopped on a call with WW art director Joy Bogdan. I asked her how she went about arranging the animal photos that made it into the paper, the secrets of how to get your own pet to pose for you, and the effect her own animal has had on her mental health during the pandemic.
Then I pivoted to the most controversial practice that our animals face each day: animal testing. Oregon Health & Science University is home to one of the nation's seven primate testing facilities. The director of OHSU's Primate Center is a woman by the name of Dr. Nancy Haigwood. In an interview with Haigwood, we asked her about the way she sees the ethical challenge that is animal testing, how animal testing has been used during the pandemic, and the controversy that has followed the work of OHSU in the past. We also talk about Haigwood's pet and my fear of dogs. It's a journey.
