Salt & Straw's Solstice Deal Sweetens the Darkest Night of the Year

When two scoops are the price of one, why not double up on The Rock’s new mincemeat pie ice cream?

The winter solstice is the darkest night of the year. Salt & Straw aims to also make it one of the sweetest.

The Portland-based ice cream chain announced a free upgrade for customers visiting any of its shops on Saturday, Dec. 21, when the sun will rise later and set earlier than at any other time of year. All single scoops will get doubled at no cost, while gift cards of $25 or more will get a $5 balance boost. The ice cream bonus is a same-day in-person event, while the gift card promotion runs in stores and online through the end of the year.

Likely Portland’s most famous ice cream store, Salt & Straw achieved national recognition throughout the 2010s for its concoctions, which are usually as artisan-crafted as they are outright outrageous. The brand’s salted caramel ice cream is probably as much a landmark taste as mixing maple frosting with bacon.

Along with the chain’s standard and seasonal recipes, the annual mixes honoring Salt & Straw co-owner Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson promoted his new Amazon/MGM movie, Red One, with three film flavors—including Krampus’ Mince Pie with Pecan Crust, made with real mincemeat bits.
