Natasha Kmeto Stares You Down in Her "I Thought You Had a Boyfriend" Video

She also makes a drop of water dance.

"I Thought You Had a Boyfriend" is the literal and figurative centerpiece of singer-producer Natasha Kmeto's new album, Inevitable. On a record exploring the confusion and self-actualization of embracing one's sexual identity, it's the moment when everything changes—when eyes linger and hands touch "a little longer than would seem polite." As I wrote in my review of Inevitable, the buzzing synths rise and fall, evoking the "euphoric seasickness of newfound romantic possibility." Here, director Max Miller renders those emotions in starkly minimalist tones, pointing the camera at Kmeto—initially rocking a sweet Blazers hat, just in time for the start of the season—and letting her manifest the song's barely-restrained desire. It's not purely a "Nothing Compares 2 U" homage, though. A few other faces pop up— including Kmeto's Chanti Darling bandmate, Chanticleer Tru—and Miller does some trippy stuff with a droplet of water.

Matthew Singer

A native Southern Californian, former Arts & Culture Editor Matthew Singer ruined Portland by coming here in 2008. He is an advocate for the canonization of the Fishbone and Oingo Boingo discographies, believes pro-wrestling is a serious art form and roots for the Lakers. Fortunately, he left Portland for Tucson, Arizona, in 2021.
