Animal Collective Debuted a Mix of Weird '90s Music on XRAY

Featuring Pavement, Guided By Voices, Beck—and a lot of stuff you've probably never heard of before.

It's the freakin' weekend, baby—time to get weird!

On Wednesday night, Animal Collective premiered their "Weird '90s Mix" on XRAY's Galaxy, My Dear, a show hosted by fellow experimental musician Jason Urick. As one might expect, there isn't a lot of No Doubt or Temple of the Dog on it—though there is some Pavement, Beck and Guided By Voices, among more obscure selections from Sun City Girls, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, the Frogs, Mr. Hageman and more. You probably won't want to bump it at a barbecue, but it'll make for a nice post-PDX Pop Now late-night comedown.

Listen below—the mix starts around the 30 minute mark.

A native Southern Californian, former Arts & Culture Editor Matthew Singer ruined Portland by coming here in 2008. He is an advocate for the canonization of the Fishbone and Oingo Boingo discographies, believes pro-wrestling is a serious art form and roots for the Lakers. Fortunately, he left Portland for Tucson, Arizona, in 2021.

Willamette Week’s reporting has concrete impacts that change laws, force action from civic leaders, and drive compromised politicians from public office.
