Watch the Trippy Animated Video for "Burgers and Balrog" by Mascaras

In case you haven't heard, the '90s are back.

Blink-182 is going through a critical reappraisal. There's a new Blair Witch movie. Tupac and Biggie are back in the news. So maybe it's just the generational nostalgia in the air—or the fact that MTV Classic launched a little while ago—but the new Mascaras video is giving off serious Liquid Television vibes. Animated by former WW Music Editor Casey Jarman, who put out the three-piece instrumental act's debut album on his Party Damage label, the clip for "Burgers and Balrog" is a tripped-out two minutes of flashing primary colors and eyeballs morphing burgers into heart-worms into wrestlers and all kinds of other free-associative imagery. Slam a Crystal Pepsi and freak out.

Willamette Week

Matthew Singer

A native Southern Californian, former Arts & Culture Editor Matthew Singer ruined Portland by coming here in 2008. He is an advocate for the canonization of the Fishbone and Oingo Boingo discographies, believes pro-wrestling is a serious art form and roots for the Lakers. Fortunately, he left Portland for Tucson, Arizona, in 2021.

Willamette Week’s reporting has concrete impacts that change laws, force action from civic leaders, and drive compromised politicians from public office.
