Bundy Gang Supporters Drag-Race Horses Through Downtown Portland

The trial starts tomorrow. The protest started Sept. 11.

The criminal trial of Ammon Bundy and his fellow anti-government militants is drawing some peculiar people to downtown Portland.

Opening statements are set to begin tomorrow morning in the trial of Bundy and seven alleged co-conspirators in the January occupation of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Eastern Oregon. But supporters of Bundy's campaign against federal land ownership have been gathering in Portland for weeks.

On Sunday, Sept. 11, those allies held a protest outside Portland's federal courthouse. Much of the demonstration featured horses.

WW correspondent Mike Bivins captured the action on video—including a drag race the likes of which downtown PDX hasn't seen for 70 or so years.

The tack on one of these horses is emblazoned with the name of Hellboy, the horse ridden by Duane Ehmer at the wildlife reserve during the takeover. (Hellboy later became part of the federal prosecution's affidavits.)

But this horse's name is Diesel. Hellboy couldn't make it.
