Album Review: Sama Dams

Comfort in Doubt (Self-Released)

[AVANT ROCK] It might always be necessary to distinguish Sam Adams from Portland's former mayor-turned-DJ. But as the frontman for his almost eponymous band, Sama Dams, the other Adams has done a damn good job distinguishing himself. On its new album, Comfort in Doubt, the band continues to build on its art-rock and prog influences, with lopsided grooves, searing guitar solos and labyrinthine melodies brought to life by Adams' malleable voice. Yet amid all the album's twists and tricks, Comfort in Doubt also displays some of the strongest, most accessible songs that Adams and company have produced.

Album opener "My Ears Are Ringing" builds from a simmer to a roar thanks to a sparse groove from drummer Chris Hermsen and a soaring hook that showcases Adams' dead-on harmonies with his wife, singer-organist Lisa. Lisa Adams plays a bigger role on this record than previous projects, and she's a welcome influence: She penned the crushing, bass-heavy "Dirty Work" and is a haunting vocal presence throughout. Several standout tracks feature her on lead vocals, including the ominous, odd-meter epic "Cold Snap" and "Maggie," a ukulele-driven number that's been a highlight of the band's recent live sets.

The album has its fair share of danceable grooves and sporadic sunniness, but it feels like a wholly natural next step from the band. The only live cut, an older song called “Tiger,” feels right at home on the record. Comfort in Doubt is the rare release that is both inviting and aggressively challenging. Sama Dams will soon need no introduction.
