[SUBURBAN SUDS] Founded in 1993, McMinnville's Golden Valley Brewery prides itself in continuing the small town's brewing tradition. The Beaverton location, just off U.S. 26, feels like an oasis in the middle of a barren wasteland of chains. Ten in-house brews and one cider grace the tap list, along with bargain-bottle options such as the Black Panther imperial stout. If you get lucky, you might find an out-of-season beer like the brewery's Oktoberfest at $2 a pint. Beer aside, Golden Valley succeeds in doing something unexpected. While the server uniforms, interior decor and location all scream "suburban chain pub," it feels different. When you're gorging on a delicious bierwurst and Munich sausage with a side of red cabbage as the server drops off an elegantly curved wooden taster tray with eight 3-ounce tasters, you'll understand.

DRINK THIS: The Black Panther imperial stout, aged in pinot noir bottles, is a winner, and it's available at a discounted rate at the pub.
