Bar Guide 2015: Angel Face

14 NE 28th Ave., 239-3804, angelfaceportland.com. 5 pm-midnight Sunday-Thursday, 5 pm-1 am Friday-Saturday.

Angel Face is a funny little drinkery—a cocktail bar without a list, walls painted to look like wallpaper, a Frenchy small-bites adjunct to Northern Spanish small-plates spot Navarre. While some of the original gimmick of this cutely salmon-tinted pillbox of a bar seemed to be that one might negotiate a drink starting with vague feelings about whiskey or gin, it's evolved into a place to have oysters or tartare and a trim glass of wine, or to order cocktail classics with confidence: a solid Negroni, a personal take on the Manhattan. Although, for a bar that focuses on classic drinks, consider it downright weird that the rye selection is just Knob Creek and Jim Beam (with Rittenhouse crossed out). And note that in the current absence of friendly founding bar manager Kelley Swenson, the staff mood is much more tart than you'd expect in a place dressed up like such a sweetheart.
