Bar Guide 2015: Mary's Club

129 SW Broadway, 227-3023, marysclub.com. 11 am-2:30 am Monday-Saturday. 11:30 am-2:30 am Sunday.

Portland's first topless bar. The place where Courtney Love once graced the stage. As every write-up about the joint will remind you, Mary's is part of the city's history. But history isn't the only reason to visit this grungy dive. In fact, it isn't even a particularly good one. Mary's offers something you don't find in many strip joints: It's a laid-back place to have a beer. (Perhaps a pint of Mary's Topless Blonde from Cascade Brewing.) The dancers pick a wide range of songs from the antique-looking jukebox onstage. The all-female serving staff weaves around the tightly packed tables and chairs. The crowd typically includes more women than your average titty bar. No, there isn't a pool table—this is still a strip club, mind you—but the vibe is more Magic Garden than Spyce. With the former's recent closing, the westside has never needed Mary's more.

Happy hour: You ain't happy enough?

Entertainment: You ain't entertained?
