Bar Guide 2015: Mock Crest Tavern

BARBAR

3435 N Lombard St., 283-5014, mockcrest.com. 9 am-2:30 am daily.

The true dive bar is an endangered species in close-in Portland. The Matador, Pal's Shanty and Slabtown—all around for more than 40 years and now, as of last year, nothing more than a past generation's musty stories. Given the legendary tenure (66-plus years) of their flagship property, the Mock Crest Tavern owners' recent acquisitions of both Yorgo's (now "Yorgo's Greeley Avenue Bar & Grill") and Sellwood's Yukon Tavern attest to their knowledge of what pumps through the dive bar's veins: beers, burgers, breakfast, and, upon review of all three establishments' menus...pudding shots? My query elicited silence in the bar. "Have you had one?" says one full-time bartendress. "This one's on me." A pair of enthusiastic patrons chimed in: "You must try them." I took one bite. Then another. Then it was gone.

Happy hour:  3-6 pm and 11 pm-close daily. $2.25 domestics, $3.75 craft and wells, $1 off wine, food specials.

Entertainment: Poker, puddin', and live music for free.
